… Finding the perfect sized pieces for the holidays!

It’s that time of year again, time to get ready for Kris Kringle!  I love this time of year, decorating and lighting up the house.

Everyone has varying amounts of space to use and not everyone has the eye to decorate tricky spaces.  We’ve found small spaces create both a challenge and an opportunity.  This year we went back to the same small apartment that we did a complete makeover on late summer.  The couple is really sweet, this is their first apartment and they saved to be able to make their space a home.

We sat down with them to find out how they celebrated the holidays when they were “back home” (aka at their parent’s homes).  Both had a different things in mind that were important to them, but at the end of the day they agreed on the key areas of focus.

Here’s their “must have” list:

            Christmas Tree

Lots of lights (they love the glow and ambience it creates)

Use some of their heirloom pieces

Incorporate sports (we had to ask more questions on this one)

Have a piece of Christmas in every room

While their list seems long and lofty, they really have the holiday spirit, and were relying on us to deliver.

We completed the design, then called them a week later to schedule “install day.”  They were pretty trusting and allowed us complete autonomy, they didn’t even want to see the design.  They provided the pieces they wanted us to use from their childhood, and then they left the apartment.

We started with assembling the tree.  Since their space and budge was small we went with an artificial tree we found on clearance (some of the “pre-lit lights didn’t work).  After restringing the tree (remember they want lots of glow / ambiance), we added the decorations they provided and supplemented them with a few new pieces.

Next, we added garland above the living room window (with lights) and over the doors leading to their laundry closet; added a bright red bow above the door.

In the hall / entry way we hung two stockings on the back of the front door.  Just outside the front door we placed a handsome snowman to greet visitors.

Finally, we hit their bedroom.  We added a small tree with sports themed ornaments and a snowman’s top hat in lieu of an angel or star.  We placed faux snow and their nutcrackers on top of their armoire and strung lights across their double windows, giving the room a romantic holiday glow.

When they arrived home (several hours later) we did a “big reveal” the look on their faces was priceless!  Their gratitude made everything worthwhile.  Their space provided some unique challenges, we had to find pieces that were on-scale and worked well with other pieces they already had.  Overall, I’m really pleased with the outcome!
